Chimney of Kanthan Sago Factory

This 10 meters high chimney of a sago factory in Kanthan,Perak
is a surprise find after looking around for it in Sarawak
i ended up with 3 old mills here
and this is the only one still in operations
that is if its veteran staff can still hold on.
It gets its raw materials, the sago trunks from the coastal area of Perak
and is delivered here by lorry.

A large pile of rubber wood used for the heating.

Rubber wood is burned here to provide the heat for the drying of the sago flour.

This is the drying area where the wet sago flour is spread evenly on the heated cement floor
under which is where the heat passes through on the way to the chimney.

probably one of the last few still in used today
with garbage probably waiting for dryer days

It must have been build by very environmentally conscious people

Chimneys of Convent Primary School

The chimneys of Convent Primary School in Tanah Rata,Cameron Highlands
is definitely a unique one for a French influence colonial building
which was officially opened in 1935 as a broarding school called the Pensionnat Notre Dame.
During the WW2 it was used as a hospital by the Japanese
and later again by the British until it was handed back to the congregation
to be restored and used as a school again.

The chimney of about 45m high of Prai Power
a Combined Cycle, single shaft configuration with a GE 9FA gas turbine,a heat recovery steam generator,
a steam turbine driving a common generator with an output of 350mw.

This building beside the Prai Power is what remains of the TNB Prai Power Station,
a thermal power plant which was decommissioned and dismantled in preparation
for the installation of a new modern combined cycle block running on natural gas
which have yet to materialize,with a short gas supply conditions in peninsular,
a heavy fuel oil thermal power plant would be a good option to even up the fuel mix
if pollutants can be reduced.

The Lakehouse Cameron Highlands Resort offers two beautiful chimneys
to welcome guests and visitors to this famous highlands resort.

A nicely decorated lightning arrestor.

Sadly the scene of the lake in front of the resort is very muddy
due to soil erosion and sedimentation caused by over farming.

These two old colonial house chimney
most probably build by the British after 1909
in the compound of the Kuala Kedah Fort are one of the lucky few
to be preserved by the museum, besides the Labuan Chimney in Labuan.

The chimneys of Mengkarak prewar shophouse is situated on a dead end forgotten road
which leads to the Mengkarak new village,
a thriving agriculture village with mostly rubber and palm oil.
The east coast KTM railway line separates the old shop houses

The 4 chimneys of about 20 to 30m high are of a combined cycle block
made up of 2X34MW Alsthom Fr6 Gas turbine with 2 Sulzer boilers and a 15MW AEG Kanis Steam Turbine and an open cycle John Brown 34MW Fr6 gas turbine
giving a total installed capacity of 117MW.
This power station was earlier part of the now defunct Sabah Gas Industries
and was taken over by the Sabah Electricity Board(SEB) in 1992
which is now called Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd(SESB)

This lone brick chimney of about 7m high is of an old slope brick kiln in Triang.
Leftover wood from sawn timber is the main source of heat for the kiln
which seems to be running smoothly in an efficient manner with clay source nearby
thus keeping it afloat ahead of its competitors,the newly designed
and more efficient multi fuel tunnel kilns.

giving an installed capacity of 1156MW.

from 2 blocks of CCGT each with 2 Siemens 137mw V94.2 gas turbine

and a 130mw steam turbine generator giving a total output of 808mw.

For a record this is the first Independent Power Producer(IPP)
in Malaysia.

at Kuala Lukut with a 2 meter high leftover chimney
probably from one as high as 7meters.

It is dangerous to get into one of these kiln as it is in the verge of collapsing.

These holes though which heat is transfered up the slope to the next kiln
and it all ends at the chimney where the smoke makes an exit.

Labuan Chimney revisit

Labuan Chimney is one chimney which facinates me most,
it's mystery and actual purpose it was build for was so intriguing
that it caused me to start this chimney blog.
It had been 2 long years since my last visit to this beautiful chimney,
visits numbering more than a dozen time
since i first set foot on the this beautiful island in 1992
and being right under it again make me feel so contented and telling myself,
yes, i am back again trying to solve the mystery.
Earlier Post on Labuan Chimney

The Chimney Museum have a nice display of exibits from the coal mining era,
it will be very complete if a mine's train is still around.

The chimney viewed from Lubuk Temiang beach.

The statement on the plaque about 'the inner wall of the chimney showed no sign of burning'
needs a change as there are clear sign of burned and overheated bricks
at the lowest 2 meter.

These over heated stains on the bricks clearly shows heat is moving up the chimney
from the two opening most probably from two brick kiln ,
one from each opening,kiln that could have been used to make bricks(for used in tunneling the mines)
or pottery(including chinese ceramics)
as there are plenty or clay and kaolin in the area
coupled with abundance of coal as a source of heat.
The pottery at Batu Arang,Selangor under similar conditions(underground coal mine)

This brick structure is probably a wall of a kiln.

Ceramic pottery littering the area behind the chimney towards Kubung Bluff
is a signs of early activitiy at Tanjung Kubung.

These are found by the seashore along Lubuk Temiang beach.

The 4 chimneys of Port Dickson Power which are about 40m high
are from 4 X 110MW GE9E open cycle Gas Turbine
giving a total output of 440MW.
This power plant looks more like a plant in a wetlands
as it is surrounded by a thick buffer of trees and natural lakes
to absorb sound emmitted from reaching the nearby housing.
The mangrove swamp inside and outside the plant attracts lot of wetland birds
like Kingfishers and Brahminy Kite.

This 8m high abandoned metal sawdust burner chimney of Mentiga Forest Industries in Pekan,Pahang is sitiuated just a few meters from the Pahang River.
It have already been abandoned for a few years due partly to shortage of timber

if we don't have the willpower to manage our forest
in a sustainable manner and also put a stop on opening up new palm oil or rubber plantation area.

This 6m high single brick garbage burner chimney is
of an ex-dumpsite at Sua Betong in Port Dickson.

It was build during the colonial days and used for burning of garbage.
Today thanks to the good thinking people of Cypark Resources Berhad,

this chimney which is suppose to be demolish

during restoration of the landfill have been preserved.

This ex-dump site is dotted with ventilators

which serve the purpose of venting of gases emitted

by the layers of rotting garbage accumulated over the years.

The 10 chimneys of Tanjung Kidurong Power Station in Bintulu are between 25 to 40m high.
There are from 6 open cycle GE Frame 6 Gas Turbine (6 x 34MW)
and a new combined cycle block consisting of 2 GE Frame 9 GT(2 x 110MW) and a steam turbine generator(110MW) giving a total installed capacity of 534MW.

This building housed 4 GE frame 6 GT.
There are another 2 more similar machine of package outdoor type
in the power station.

This two 10m high brick chimney of Bee Leong Brickworks in Kuantan
is from a slope type brick kiln.
This kiln company is a very old one and i think it is one of the first few brick kiln operating in Kuantan. They also have a few tunnel kiln running in the factory.

The slope kiln is about 100m long with two kiln running parallel.

are about 50m high.

The 6 chimneys of Genting Sanyen Kuala Langat Power Plant
which are about 40m high is of a Combined Cycle Plant
with a CC block of 3x Alstom 13E2M Gas Turbine,3 Boilers and a Steam Turbine
and another CC block of a Hitachi Frame 5 GT,a Kvaerner Frame 6 GT and a Boiler
with a total generating capacity of about 720mw of power.

This is the dummy chimney i was talking about
which is similar to the ones in Lumut Power Plant,
the reason for it was the acute power shortages after the 1993 blackout in peninsular Malaysia, since the GT was able to be commisioned much earlier than the steam turbines
an elbow was first installed after the GT to divert the exhaust flow up the chimney while waiting for the completion of the rest of the Combine Cycle facility.
The elbow then was replaced by a straight plenum to the Boilers
thus leaving 3 dummy chimneys in a CC block.

There are altogether 12 chimneys of about 40m high
in this 1,943MW CCGT(Combine Cycle Gas Turbine) Power Plant
Of which 3 chimneys from GB3(new Phase) are dummy and are not in used.
There are 9 set of Alstom 13E2 Gas Turbine Generator
and 3 set of steam turbine Generator
in the plant running on gas and diesel as standby fuel.
The LPP is situated by the seaside in Segari,Perak
nearby to the town of Pantai Remis.

These ex-tin mine lake forms a natural fence and added a nice scenery to the power plant
besides the straits of Malacca on the other side.

is situated at 13th miles Segari Road,
Pantai Remis,Perak.
Chimney no:1 and 3 is about 10m,

Chimneys of Kapar Power Station

The three RC chimneys which are about 120m high of Kapar Power Station
is situated at Kampung Tok Muda,Kapar about 18km from Klang.
It is the largest power station in Malaysia with a generation capacity of 2420MW.
It is also the only power station in Malaysia with triple fuel firing capability (gas, oil, and coal).

There are three phase in the power station project and a fast track open cycle Gas Turbine.
The ash ponds in the power plant is also a water birds heaven
where more than 60 species of waterbirds have been spotted.

The 40m chimneys of the two remaining Nuovo Pignone GE FR9 Gas Turbines
with a total capacity of 220mw of an initial three
which were installed after the national blackout of 1993 on a fast track basis.

during the process of making this speciality charcoal

This 7m high brick chimney of an unnamed brick kiln at Gopeng to Batu Gajah road
is mainly use for making flower pots.

The entrance with a display of its end products.
No one at the entrance except some fierce dogs.

The chimney theme guard house at an industrial area nearby,
looks like the architect is also caught by the chimney bug.

Japanese Carbide Factory Chimney

This 18m high brick chimney of a Japanese Carbide factory for ammunition use
is situated at Kampung Tanjung Bangkung in Malim Nawar,Perak.
It was build during the Japanese Occupation time and there is a base of another chimney
beside it which was never completed because of their sudden surrender.
The chimney is circular in shape,6m diameter at the base and about 3m on top with 4 arches.
The other remnant of the factory is a part of the fencing.

There is 3oomm diameter hole here.

Mentakab KYH Brickworks Chimney

This chimney of KYH brickworks is quite hidden

at the side of the kiln compound surounded by palm oil trees and fencing.

It is about 25m high,the circular shape brick chimney with a decorated top

is build not long ago together with the modern tunnel type kiln for faster mass production

replacing the old slope type kiln which is much slower.

Bukit Besi Chimneys

Bukit Besi chimneys ,altogether there are 5 of them,
4 on the furnace area and another one on top of a small hill across the road.
3 are brick ones and another 2 made of concrete with bricks on the inside
as a heat insulator.

Chimney no:1,about 10m high is made of brick with 4 arch at the bottom
is in a real bad shape with creepers getting an underhand over it
spitting it up,so try not to get too near this chimney.
We might not see the chimneys here in future
unless some restoration work like
the one done on the Labuan Chimney is carried out.

It is a crying shame to see a historical site like this go to waste,
the least who ever is in charge of the place could do is
to remove the creepers on the chimneys,
add pavement for visitors to walk around the site
and a stairways to decent from the road.
As for the chimney no:5 on the other side of the road
a stairways up the hill and pavement to the site should be enough
and leave the trees alone.

Please,please get rid of the 2 cows tied to the the chimney area

the place is full of cowdugs now,

very soon they might add a cowshed.

Chimney no:2 about 20m high is a concrete one connected directly to the furnace

which is located in between the two row of beams.

Chimney no:3 ,about 7m high is a brick one

circular in shape and only one sample left in Malaysia.

Chimney no:4 about 6m high also made of bricks.

Chimney no:5 is about 20m high is made of concrete is located

on top of a small hill on the other side of the road.

This 7m high metal chimney of a modern brick kiln in situated in a middle of no where
about 10km from the Kuantan Airport.
The present brick kiln of the tunnel type and i think using a mix type of fuel,palm oil bio mass and sawdust for burning and extraction fan for circulation.

and insulated pipes supplying heat to the kiln.

The old staff quarters of Malim Nawar Power Station build in late 40s by the Perak River Hydro-electric company
after the second world war is still standing strong after 60 years,
thanks to the brick,concrete and high quality wood being used during its construction.

Tapah Road Railway Station Chimney?

This Tapah Road Railway Station Chimney like structure is actually not a chimney
but a water tank tower, i assume used for storing water for use during those days
when trains are running on steam engine where water and coal plays an important
part .

Base on the photo of 3 chimney concept stucture below
which i took at the Labuan Chimney Information Center
only one more is left to be visited that is the one at the old Bukit Besi mines

The water tower is now painted white and had lost its colonial look without the red brick colour.
Anyway we should be very thankful to whoever is in charge at KTM
for leaving this unique stucture alone in the upgrading of the Station,
maybe they should add a plaque describing when it is build and its used
instead of letting us crack our heads.

The tower have 4 round ventilation window and 4 arch
where all except one is left open for a door.

At the bottom of the tower is a pipe of about 30mm diameter
which i think is the outlet and 2 smaller pipe which supply water to the tank which is kept enclosed in the tower and supported by 2 wooden beams.

Here you can see 4 holes where onces 2 wooden beam were used to support a metal tank
and it is now covers with white cement.

Kampar Saw Dust Burner Chimney

This 5m high brick saw dust burner with a top metal chimney of a sawmill
is situated in Kampar to Changkat Jong Road in Kampar town in the state of Perak.
It is no more in use as the sawdust from the sawing of timber are now collected in the hut behind and sold to be process into chipboard,used for making things like writing pencil or even as a fuel for firing up brick kilns.

Fraser's Hill is named after Louis James Fraser, a Scotsman who prospected for gold in Australia but eventually struck tin here instead in the 1890s. Employing Chinese miners to do the hard work for him and earning his keep by operating mule trains down the mountain, Fraser set up opium and gambling dens to increase his profits, which may have had something to do with his subsequent mysterious disappearance.
The tin ran out in 1913, but the lush valley within was rediscovered as a colonial hill resort that, thanks to its 1524 m elevation, enjoys considerably cooler temperatures than Kuala Lumpur. By 1922 a road had been cut through the mountains to the valley, which soon sprouted bungalows and even one of Malaya's first golf courses.
Today it is under the care of Fraser's Hill Development Corporation

Bintulu's abandoned Brick Kiln Chimneys

This abandoned Downdraught Brick Kiln with two 9m and one 5m high chimney
seems to have been left idle for a few years,
its kiln roof had already collapsed
even with a protective zinc roof over it.

Brick is now much sought after for house construction in rural areas
in Sarawak with escalating wood prices with timber running out
due to over logging and land clearing for plantations.
It's a real big lost as these virgin forest just can't be replaced overnight,
it should have been done in a more sustainable way instead
so that there is always some left for our future generations .

Connaught Bridge Power Station Chimneys

This 100m high power plant chimney is build in the early 80s
to replace the decommisioned coal and later heavy fuel fired steam turbines,
running on either diesel or medium fuel oils the new Siemens Gas Turbine
needed the height to channel off the polutants.
It was later converted to a Combined Cycle Plant running normally by gas
with diesel as standby fuel,
where the high temperature exhaust gas of about 550 deg C
is further channeled to heat up a boiler
which feeds steam to a Parsons steam turbine generator.
From an initial 210mw earlier it is now able to generate another 105mw
to bring a new total of 315mw of electricity.
Besides being more efficient it also generated less pollutant since it is now running on gas.

Gelugor Power Station

Gelugor Power Station chimney is 115m high.
This new chimney was only build when the plant was upgraded from 220mw open cycle to 330mw output combine cycle mode.
A new 7km gas pipeline from the mainland was also added to enable the plant to run on gas with diesel as standby fuel.

Mukah Coal Fired Power Station

The Chimney of Mukah Coal Fired Power Station is of approximately 100m high.
The plant build by China National Machinery & Equipment Import & Export Corporation will be fully commissioned in 2009 with 2 x 135MW output mostly to be utilized by the new Press Metal Sarawak Aluminium Smelther next door.
One thing good about the plant is that coal is also mined nearby
and transported by lorry from mines of Sarawak Coal Resourses in Mukah Balingian area.

Build in the early fourties by the British and abandoned during world war 2 and finally completed before the power plant come on stream in 1953.
Some of the houses came complete with fireplace and kitchen chimneys.
Well! considering the weather those days must be so much colder then
and wood was then the main source of heat especially for cooking
before the arrival of cooking gas and electricity hence the need for chimneys to channel out all the smoke.

This sawdust burner of Tong Leong Sawmill in Bentong is barely use nowadays
because the sawdust which is a byproduct from sawing timber is now a valueable commodity and it is used to make chipboard for the furniture industry
so meaning less smoke polution from the burner nowadays.
Timber industry which ones upon the time is booming like there is no tommorrow
is now on the decline in the peninsular Malaysia with only a handfull of it left running due to declining timber reserve.Price of wood is so high nowadays that it is even cheaper to build a house from brick than wood.

Batu Arang's Brick Kiln Factory Chimney

Batu Arang was once a coal main mining town in Selangor, Malaysia.

Apart from coal, Batu Arang was also known for its bricks and pottery manufacturing

which utilizes the abundant supply of coal as a source of fuel.

Today it no longer supplies coal and holds no significant role.

There are presently 5 chimneys of various height up of to 20m still standing.

The site have been abandoned for quite some time and some of the chimneys

are on a verge of colapsing, besides being infested with snakes,mosquitos

and planks with nails and some hidden underground smoke tunnel

so please pay your visit here in jeans,long sleeves and shoes

to be on the safe side.

'Firing by Downdraught Kiln The downdraught kiln was far more efficient than the Scotch or Suffolk. Firing was much easier to control. They were often circular in structure with about eight fire holes.
Inside the fireholes were baffles or 'bag' of firebricks. It had a domed roof and a perforated floor under which ran a flue leading to the chimney stack. The circular or 'beehive' kiln had a capacity of about 12,000 green bricks. Coal was lit inside the firehole grates and hot gases were directed upward from the baffles and then downwards from the underside of the dome and through the stacked bricks by the draught from the chimney. Altogether it took fourteen days or so to operate, with two days for loading or setting, three days for 'curing', two days for heating to full temperature, one day at full heat, then another three or four days to cool down and a further day to unload '

Mukah's Sago Factory Chimney is a 20 meters high brick structure situated by the side of the Batang Mukah's river banks

in the fast developing town of Mukah,

from my observation i think this is one of the last surviving remnant
of the colonial days here.

The Chimney tower is a rectangular structure 32.5 meters in height and wholly built from raw red bricks. This tower is well over a century old and is one of the leftovers of mining coal mining activities in Labuan. It is a historical symbol of pride to the people of Labuan because of its uniqueness and strong foundation and as for its purpose,
my guess is it is a chimney of a brick kiln with 2 kiln
since there are 2 arch which will be connected by a brick tunnel to the kilns.
The abundance of raw material,clay and kaolin for making of bricks,pot and vase
and coal for firing up the kiln put a little weight on my guess moreover a lot of
bricks is also needed for tunneling works in the coal mines below.
A similar kiln is build in Batu Arang where there are plenty of coal underneath.

Chimney Information Center’s building is located on the historical site of the Chimney Historical Complex in Tanjung Kubong, known during the British occupational period as Cool Point. It functions as a site museum which will exhibit and inform of the history of Tanjung Kubong, especially the history of coal mining which began in 1847 through 1911. Located nearby is the Chimney tower which is of no less importance in the history of the nation.
